White Towns of Andalucia

Andalucia is famous for many things. It’s the home of Flamenco, tapas, its Moorish influences and the iconic white towns, or Pueblos Blancos. These clusters of white washed buildings adorn the whole community either by the coast and particularly in the hillsides.

In a previous post I described our visit to the lovely white town of Casares. We were so taken by it’ loveliness we decided to find more examples. During our month long stay in Conil de la Frontera, itself a pretty oceanside white town, we rented a car to explore the region and get to know some of these beautiful places a little better.

This post doesn’t need a lot of word because the pictures speak for themselves, so that’s exactly what I’ll do.

Grazalema – Nestled into the scenic Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, this pretty village is apparently the wettest place in Spain. That’s hard to believe given it’s location in an otherwise arid area but the special micro-climate is the result of the surrounding mountains being the first high area that the humid air from the Atlantic hits. It provides a beautiful lush landscape that hardly feels like Southern Spain at all.

Zahara de la Sierra – Perched above and alongside a pretty reservoir, another beautiful town a short, scenic drive from Grazalema. Perfect place for a spot of lunch.

Medina Sidonia – Considered one of the oldest cities in Europe. It feels more like a working city than a tourist destination compared to the other places we visited. A little cloudy the day we were there but we still enjoyed wandering the historic streets

Vejer de la Frontera – Our favorite of the white towns we visited. It has an amazing location with views over the Atlantic, and a labyrinth of pretty cobbled streets to wander and get lost in. A picture perfect location.
